A bearingless circulatory assist device including at least one rotor/stator pair and an axial flow impeller. The rotor is hollow, and the rotor/stator pair is configured such that an outer radial surface of the rotor interacts with magnetic fields associated with the corresponding stator to create a normal magnetic force on the rotor. In some examples, the circulatory assist device is a bearingless motor that is capable of producing controllable radial and tilting magnetic forces and passive axial forces to stably levitate. The axial flow impeller is connected to the rotor of rotor/stator pair (e.g., integrated into the center of the rotor). The circulatory assist device can be scaled for implantation in pediatric patients (e.g., to supplement Fontan circulation), or as a mechanical pediatric or adult ventricle assist device (e.g., RVAD).
