Abstract
Single injector, i.e., a multimode nasal injector, that can be used for intranasal, intramuscular, and intravenous medication delivery; medication syringes that isolate the needle from the medication in the syringe prior to medication delivery, which syringes may be used with the multimode nasal injector.
Claims27
A medication syringe, comprising:
- an elongated barrel having a barrel plunger end and an opposing barrel needle end and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, the barrel having a cavity therein for holding a medication;
- a plunger seal slidably disposed in the cavity proximate the barrel plunger end;
- a medication plug having a medication seal disposed therein, the medication plug attached to the barrel needle end of the elongated barrel with the medication seal in contact with the barrel needle end of the elongated barrel to prevent the egress of medication from the cavity through the barrel needle end;
- a double-ended needle attached to a needle hub, the needle hub attachable to the medication plug so that upon placement of the needle hub on the medication plug the medication seal is pierced by a selected end of the double-ended needle to place the double-ended needle in fluid communication with the cavity to receive medication therefrom.
A multimode nasal medication injector housing for use with a needle-based injection system (NIS), the multimode nasal medication injector housing capable of conversion from a nasal modality of medication delivery to an intravenous delivery mode and an intramuscular medication delivery mode, the multimode nasal medication injector housing comprising:
- a front housing having a front housing distal end and a front housing proximal end and a rear housing having a rear housing distal end and a rear housing proximal end, the front housing proximal end slidably coupled to the rear housing distal end to define a housing cavity therein and to permit the front and rear housings to translate relative to one another along a longitudinal axis extending therethrough;
- a plunger permanently attached interior to the rear housing at a selected location at the rear housing proximal end, the plunger extending along the longitudinal axis and a having opposing distal and proximal plunger ends, the proximal plunger end in contact with the rear housing;
- a nasal nozzle having distal and proximal nozzle ends with a canal disposed interior thereto between the distal and proximal nozzle ends, the nasal nozzle extending along the longitudinal axis, the proximal nozzle end removably coupled to the front housing at the front housing distal end, the nasal nozzle having one or more openings at the distal nozzle end through which the medication is delivered from the multimode nasal medication injector housing.
The multimode nasal medication injector housing according to 26, wherein the medication syringe includes a flange at the barrel plunger end and the spring has two opposing ends and a selected end is disposed against the flange.
