Abstract

The disclosure provides antimicrobial bone cement compositions comprising a plurality of metallic nanoparticles, a photosensitizer, and a bone cement, which is mixed to form a metallic nanoparticle-photosensitizer bone cement mixture. This mixture exhibits activity in dark conditions without requiring a light source. The disclosure also provides methods of manufacturing an antimicrobial implant with the antimicrobial metallic nanoparticle-photosensitizer bone cement mixture compositions disclosed by the invention.
