Abstract
Disclosed is a process of making an expanded fluoropolymer, e.g., PTFE, article is disclosed. The article is formed from a PTFE resin, calendered, and then expanded (e.g., uniaxially, multiaxially, etc.) at an elevated temperature. After cooling, the article is used to form a surgically implanted device, e.g., a surgical prosthetic sling.
Claims20
A surgical implant comprising:
- an elongated flat body composed of a material having a microporous structure comprising a plurality of solid nodes and a plurality of fibrils radiating between the plurality of solid nodes to define a plurality of pores, wherein more than about 80% of the elongated body is comprised of solid nodes, and wherein the microporous structure is closed to ingrowth and bacterial penetration.
A surgical implant having a microporous structure that is closed to ingrowth and bacterial penetration, the surgical implant comprising:
- an elongated flat body composed of a material comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of fibrils interconnecting the nodes, wherein the nodes have a density between about 2.0 to about 2.2 grams per cubic centimeter, while the material overall has a density of less than about 2.0 grams per cubic centimeter;
- and
- a plurality of pores defined between the plurality of nodes and the plurality of fibrils.
