Abstract
A system and method for detecting seizures in a patient are disclosed. The method includes measuring at least one signal associated with the patient over a first time period, and calculating a first slope having a rate of change in a first signal of the at least one signal over the first time period. The first signal is a heart rate. The method also includes determining a difference between the first slope and a reference slope, as well as detecting an epileptic seizure based at least upon the difference between the first slope and the reference slope. Furthermore, the method includes quantifying the epileptic seizure by calculating a severity of the seizure. The severity is the product of a seizure duration and a seizure intensity.
Claims22
A medical device for detecting seizures in a patient, comprising:
- a cardiac sensor that outputs cardiac sensor signals indicative of cardiac activity of the patient;
- a respiratory sensor that outputs respiratory sensor signals indicative of respiratory activity of the patient;
- and
- a controller communicatively coupled to the cardiac sensor and the respiratory sensor and configured to:
- determine, from the cardiac sensor signals, a heart rate of the patient and a heart rate slope representing a rate of change of the heart rate over a heart rate time period;
- determine, from the respiratory sensor signals, a respiratory rate of the patient and a respiratory rate slope representing a rate of change of the respiratory rate over a respiratory rate time period;
- compare the heart rate slope to a heart rate reference slope representing changes in heartbeat interval durations during non-ictal conditions;
- compare the respiratory rate slope to a respiratory rate reference slope representing changes in time intervals between the patient's breaths during non-ictal conditions;
- and
- detect an epileptic seizure based at least in part on at least one of:
- a difference between the heart rate slope and the heart rate reference slope;
- and
- a difference between the respiratory rate slope and the respiratory rate reference slope;

- determining, from the cardiac sensor signals, a heart rate of the patient and a heart rate slope representing a rate of change of the heart rate over a heart rate time period;
- determining, from the respiratory sensor signals, a respiratory rate of the patient and a respiratory rate slope representing a rate of change of the respiratory rate over a respiratory rate time period;
- comparing the heart rate slope to a heart rate reference slope representing changes in heartbeat interval durations during non-ictal conditions;
- comparing the respiratory rate slope to a respiratory rate reference slope representing changes in time intervals between the patient's breaths during non-ictal conditions;
- detecting an epileptic seizure based at least in part on at least one of:
- a difference between the heart rate slope and the heart rate reference slope;

- issuing a warning to the patient or a caregiver;
- delivering a therapy;
- or
- generating a log event including a date and time of seizure occurrence and a measure of seizure intensity.
A seizure detection and characterization system for detecting epileptic seizures in a patient, comprising:
