A bodily-fluid diversion device, comprising:
- a housing having an inlet port at a proximal end of the housing and an outlet port at a distal end of the housing, the inlet port configured to be fluidly coupled to a distal end of a needle having a proximal end configured to puncture a patient to acquire a bodily fluid sample;
- a sampling channel disposed within and extending through the housing from the proximal end of the housing to the distal end of the housing, the sampling channel being defined in part by the inlet port and the outlet port;
- a vacuum diversion chamber disposed within the housing, an exterior wall of the vacuum diversion chamber defining a sealable access port;
- a diversion chamber channel disposed within the housing and fluidly coupling the sampling channel with the vacuum diversion chamber, a proximal end of the diversion chamber channel is positioned at a juncture of the diversion chamber channel and the sampling channel, a distal end of the diversion chamber channel is positioned in the vacuum diversion chamber and forms an outlet into the vacuum diversion chamber;
- a manual flow control switch disposed along the diversion chamber channel at the distal end of the diversion chamber, the manual flow control switch fluidly coupled to an inlet portion of the sampling channel;
- a diversion chamber one-way valve disposed at the distal end of the diversion chamber channel and distal to the manual flow control switch;
- and
- an outlet channel one-way valve disposed along the sampling channel such that a valve inlet of the outlet channel one-way valve is disposed at the juncture of the diversion chamber channel and the sampling channel,
- wherein, prior to a use to acquire the bodily fluid sample, the bodily-fluid diversion device is configured such that an interior of the vacuum diversion chamber has been evacuated, via a pump device coupled to the sealable access port, to at least a first partial vacuum, the first partial vacuum being maintained when the manual flow control switch and the sealable access port are in a closed state, and the diversion chamber one-way valve is in an open state in response to the first partial vacuum, and
- wherein the manual flow control switch is configured to be transitioned to an open state such that the first partial vacuum draws an initial first portion of the bodily fluid through each of the manual flow control switch and the diversion chamber one-way valve and into the vacuum diversion chamber, the diversion chamber one-way valve configured to transition to a closed state after the initial first portion of the bodily fluid is in the vacuum diversion chamber, and
- wherein the outlet channel one-way valve is configured to transition from a closed state to an open state after the diversion chamber has been filled with the initial first portion of the bodily fluid and the diversion chamber one-way valve has transitioned to its closed state such that a subsequently received second portion of the bodily fluid exits the outlet port for collection in a collection tube fluidly coupled to the outlet port of the housing.
