Abstract
A nasal/oral cannula for collecting a flow of exhaled gases and its method of manufacture are disclosed. The cannula comprises an elongated tubular body having a first and a second end portion, a surface and an internal volume; a wall internally disposed within said tubular body, said wall defining a first subvolume of said internal volume in the lengthwise direction of the tubular body; and an inlet through said surface, for introducing exhaled gases into said first subvolume. The first end portion defines an exit port for exhaled gases from said subvolume, and said wall is arranged directly adjacent to said inlet.

(canceled)
A respiratory cannula system comprising:
- a cannula comprising:
- a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end opposite the first end, an exit port at the second end, and an interior comprising a first subvolume and a second subvolume;
- a gas-delivery assembly fluidly coupled with the first subvolume and configured to direct a gas to a first nostril of a subject;
- an oral sampling assembly fluidly coupled with the second subvolume, configured to direct gases exhaled from a mouth of the subject to the second subvolume, and defining a distal-most sampling assembly of the second subvolume relative to the exit port;
- a nasal sampling assembly fluidly coupled with the second subvolume, disposed between the oral sampling assembly and the exit port, and configured to direct gases exhaled from a second nostril of the subject to the second subvolume;
- and
- a wall arranged within the interior of the tubular body and configured to divide the interior into the first subvolume and the second subvolume, the first subvolume configured to receive the gas, the wall defining a boundary of the second subvolume adjacent to the oral sampling assembly, and said second subvolume defining a sampling flow path configured to direct gases exhaled from the second nostril and the mouth toward the exit port;
- and
- a gas-handling assembly coupled with the cannula and configured to supply the gas to the first subvolume, direct gases exhaled from the mouth to the oral sampling assembly, and convey gases from the second subvolume away from the exit port.
A respiratory cannula system comprising:
- a cannula comprising:
- a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end opposite the first end, an exit port at the second end, and an interior comprising a first subvolume and a second subvolume;
- a gas-delivery assembly fluidly coupled with the first subvolume and configured to direct a gas to a first nostril of a subject;
- an oral sampling assembly fluidly coupled with the second subvolume, comprising an oral sampling member, and defining a distal-most sampling assembly of the second subvolume relative to the exit port;
- a nasal sampling assembly fluidly coupled with the second subvolume, disposed between the oral sampling assembly and the exit port, and configured to direct gases exhaled from a second nostril of the subject into the second subvolume;
- and
- a wall configured to divide the interior into the first subvolume and the second subvolume, the first subvolume configured to receive a gas, the wall defining a boundary of the second subvolume adjacent to the oral sampling assembly, and the second subvolume defining a sampling flow path configured to direct gases exhaled from the second nostril and a mouth of the subject toward the exit port;
- and
- an oral breath collector coupled with the oral sampling assembly and configured to direct gases exhaled from the mouth to the second subvolume.
A respiratory cannula comprising:
- a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end opposite the first end, an exit port at the second end, and an interior comprising a first subvolume and a second subvolume;
- a gas-delivery assembly fluidly coupled with the first subvolume and configured to direct a gas to a first nostril of a subject;
- an oral sampling assembly fluidly coupled with the second subvolume, comprising an oral sampling member configured to receive gases exhaled from a mouth of the subject and direct the gases to the second subvolume, and defining a distal-most sampling assembly of the second subvolume relative to the exit port;
- a nasal sampling assembly fluidly coupled with the second subvolume, disposed between the oral sampling assembly and the exit port, and configured to direct gases exhaled from a second nostril of the subject into said second subvolume;
- and
- a wall configured to divide the interior into the first subvolume and the second subvolume, the first subvolume configured to receive the gas, the wall defining a boundary of the second subvolume adjacent to the oral sampling assembly, and said second subvolume defining a sampling flow path configured to direct gases exhaled from the second nostril and the mouth toward the exit port.
