Abstract
A bioreactor includes a first compartment designed to retain seaweed sporophytes, a second compartment in fluid communication with the first compartment that includes one or more settlement surfaces, and a first porous barrier between the first and second compartments that allows the seaweed spores to pass from the first compartment to the second compartment, and systems comprising the bioreactor. Also provided herein are methods of culturing seaweed, for example, using a bioreactor provided herein.

- a reservoir;
- one or more filters;
- one or more pumps;
- an air blower capable of providing air to the bioreactor;
- a light source configured to supply light to a surface of liquid in the bioreactor;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- expose a culture of A. taxiformis or A. armata sporophytes to the light supplied by the light source;
- and
- alter an amount of the light based on a density of the culture;
- wherein the reservoir, the bioreactor, the one or more filters, and the one or more pumps are capable of being in fluid communication.
