This disclosure provides methods, components, devices and systems for receiver-based real-time transport protocol (RTP) duplication. A receiving device, which receives transport protocol packets from a transmitting device, may determine whether to start or stop packet duplication and may transmit a trigger signal to start or stop the packet duplication based on receiver-side metrics. The receiving device may measure, for example, one or more of packet loss, latency, or jitter, and transmit a trigger signal to start packet duplication if one or more of the metrics satisfies a threshold. The receiving device may measure these metrics over a sliding window to determine whether to transmit a trigger signal to start packet duplication. If the transmitting device is performing packet duplication, the receiving device may determine when to stop packet duplication. For example, if packet duplication is not improving performance, the receiving device may send a trigger signal to stop packet duplication.
