4k content memory fragmentation viewing countermeasures

A system comprising:

• one or more processing devices;
• and
• memory communicatively coupled with and readable by the one or more processing devices and having stored therein processor-readable instructions which, when executed by the one or more processing devices, cause the system to perform operations comprising:
• receiving a request to play media;
• determining a plurality of available resolutions for the media, the plurality of available resolutions comprising at least a first resolution and a second resolution, wherein the second resolution is higher than the first resolution;
• determining, based at least in part on available network bandwidth, a target resolution for playback of the media;
• determining a buffer size associated with the target resolution, wherein the buffer size corresponds to an amount of memory required to support playback at the target resolution;
• determining whether sufficient memory is available in the computing system to support the buffer size;
• responsive to the determining that sufficient memory is available to support the buffer size, causing the media to be displayed at the target resolution;
• and
• responsive to a change in at least one condition associated with playback, determining an updated target resolution and a corresponding updated buffer size, and causing the media to be displayed at the updated target resolution when the updated buffer size is available.

One or more non-transitory, machine-readable media having machine-readable instructions thereon which, when executed by one or more processing devices, cause a system to perform operations comprising:

• receiving a request to play media;
• determining a plurality of available resolutions for the media, the plurality of available resolutions comprising at least a first resolution and a second resolution, wherein the second resolution is higher than the first resolution;
• determining, based at least in part on available network bandwidth, a target resolution for playback of the media;
• determining a buffer size associated with the target resolution, wherein the buffer size corresponds to an amount of memory required to support playback at the target resolution;
• determining whether sufficient memory is available in the computing system to support the buffer size;
• responsive to the determining that sufficient memory is available to support the buffer size, causing the media to be displayed at the target resolution;
• and
• responsive to a change in at least one condition associated with playback, determining an updated target resolution and a corresponding updated buffer size, and causing the media to be displayed at the updated target resolution when the updated buffer size is available.
