A system improves message transport between nodes in a collective communication system by integrating a high-bandwidth intra-node transport hop into inter-node operations at the collective transport layer (CTL). The system overcomes contention faced by using PCIe bus when multiple NICs share the same link. The system allocates a proxy buffer on a GPU that is topologically closer to an optimal R-NIC (RDMA Network Interface Card), registering that buffer for RDMA, and staging network-bound data through this proxy GPU using high-bandwidth links. The system sends data from a source GPU to the proxy GPU, receives into a proxy buffer on the destination GPU, and gathers the data back to the target GPU over the high-speed intra-node bus. The system boosts performance, mitigates PCIe bottlenecks, improves resilience in failure or load redistribution scenarios in collective communication systems.
