Systems and methods enable browser-based online editing and real-time co-authoring of documents stored in on-premises content management systems using a cloud-based online editor without permanently moving the documents to the cloud. An on-premises Online Editing Service (OES) connector service, together with an event hub, notification database, notification service, and heartbeat monitoring, bridges the on-premises repository with the cloud-based editor while preserving on-premises permissions, versioning, and document control. In another embodiment, native desktop client applications are directly integrated with the on-premises repository through the cloud-based online editing infrastructure. A remote editing service server authenticates with the OES connector service, which validates on-premises user permissions and provides an authorized folder structure and documents directly to the native desktop client.
