Methods and apparatus for estimating phase noise (PN) in communication systems employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and discrete Fourier transform spreading (DFT-s). Implementations can facilitate reductions in communication overhead and improved estimations of PN. To estimate PN in a received signal, a search space of candidate PN values is constructed by a neural network based on interpolations obtained from phase-tracking pilot signals. A path metric is calculated for each candidate value to determine its likelihood, and another neural network is used weigh the candidate values and determine an optimal PN estimate within the search space for the signal. The neural networks are trained by supervised and communication-aware training.
