Methods and wireless communication devices for rate adaptation in wireless networks are disclosed. In one aspect, a wireless communication device obtains channel condition information associated with a wireless channel and applies a prediction model to the channel condition information to generate transmission quality predictions for candidate transmission rates. The device selects a target transmission rate based on the predictions and transmits data packets at the target transmission rate. In another aspect, the prediction model determines a predicted maximum usable transmission rate for a selected channel bandwidth. A reduced transmission rate is lower than the predicted maximum usable transmission rate by a predetermined rate offset, and the device switches to a narrower channel bandwidth when the target transmission rate reaches the reduced transmission rate. In yet another aspect, model parameters of the prediction model are adjustable based on actual transmission results.
