Abstract
A wireless power transfer device is disclosed that includes at least a first coil layer and a second coil layer, each coil layer including two coil windings positioned adjacent to one another in a lateral direction; wherein the two coil windings in each corresponding coil layer are connected in series and are wound in the same rotational direction, and the first and second coil layers are stacked in layers on top of one another. The magnetic fields of the coil layers can interact with one another in a constructive manner such that the overall efficiency and power transmission of the wireless power transfer device can be enhanced.

A method of wirelessly transferring power, comprising:
- supplying current from a power source to a transmitter coil, the transmitter coil comprising a first coil layer having a first pair of coil windings positioned laterally adjacent to one another and a second coil layer having a second pair of coil windings positioned laterally adjacent to one another, wherein the first and second coil layers are stacked on top of one another in a direction transverse to the lateral direction;
- exciting the coil windings of each coil layer such that the coil windings in each coil layer produce diverging magnetic fields in a direction transverse to the lateral direction;
- and
- inductively transferring power from the transmitter coil to a receiver coil spaced apart from the transmitter coil, wherein the magnetic field produced in each coil layer of the transmitter coil interferes constructively with the corresponding magnetic field produced by the corresponding coil windings of the other coil layer.
A wireless power transfer device, comprising:
- a transmitter coil comprising a first coil layer and a second coil layer, each coil layer including two coil windings positioned adjacent to one another in a lateral direction, wherein the two coil windings in each corresponding coil layer are connected in series and are wound in the same rotational direction with respect to the direction of current flow through the coil windings, and the first and second coil layers are stacked in layers on top of one another;
- a receiver coil spaced apart from the transmitter coil;
- and
- a ferrite magnetic shield layer located adjacent to the transmitter coil and positioned on a side of the transmitter coil opposite from the receiver coil;
- wherein no magnetic shield layer is positioned on a side of the receiver coil opposite from the transmitter coil.
A wireless power transfer device, comprising:
- a transmitter coil comprising at least a first coil layer and a second coil layer stacked on top of one another, each coil layer including two coil windings positioned adjacent to one another in a lateral direction, wherein each coil winding is wound into a circular-spiral shape;
- wherein the two coil windings in each corresponding coil layer are connected in series and are wound in the same rotational direction with respect to the direction of current flow through the coil windings;
- and
- wherein the coil windings are made from Litz wire.
A wireless power transfer device, comprising:
- a transmitter coil comprising a first coil layer, a second coil layer, a third coil layer, and a fourth coil layer, each coil layer including two coil windings positioned adjacent to one another in a lateral direction, wherein the two coil windings in each corresponding coil layer are connected in series and are wound in the same rotational direction with respect to the direction of current flow through the coil windings;
- wherein the first, second, third, and fourth coil layers are stacked in layers on top of one another such that the magnetic field produced in each coil layer interferes constructively with the corresponding magnetic field produced by the corresponding coil windings of the other coil layers.
A wireless power transfer system for charging an electric device, the system comprising:
- a transmitter coil connected to a power source, the transmitter coil comprising at least a first coil layer and a second coil layer, each coil layer including two coil windings positioned adjacent to one another in a lateral direction, wherein the two coil windings in each corresponding coil layer are connected in series and are wound in the same rotational direction with respect to the direction of current flow through the coil windings, and the first and second coil layers are stacked in layers on top of one another;
- a receiver coil associated with the electric device and spaced apart from the transmitter coil, the receiver coil comprising at least a third coil layer and a fourth coil layer, each coil layer including two coil windings positioned adjacent to one another in a lateral direction, connected in series, and wound in the same rotational direction;
- and
- at least one magnetic shield layer made of ferrite positioned adjacent an outermost coil layer of the transmitter coil on a side opposite from the receiver coil;
- wherein the transmitter coil is configured to transfer power via induction to the receiver coil when the receiver coil is proximate to magnetic fields generated by the transmitter coil.
A wireless power transfer device, comprising:
- a transmitter coil comprising at least a first coil layer and a second coil layer, each coil layer including two coil windings positioned adjacent to one another in a lateral direction, wherein the two coil windings in each corresponding coil layer are connected in series and are wound in the same rotational direction with respect to the direction of current flow through the coil windings, and the first and second coil layers are stacked in layers on top of one another;
- a receiver coil spaced apart from the transmitter coil;
- and
- a magnetic shield layer located adjacent to the transmitter coil and positioned on a side of the transmitter coil opposite from the receiver coil, the magnetic shield layer made of a material selected from the group consisting of neodymium, nickel, nickel-iron, steel, and cobalt-iron.
