Abstract
An antenna system includes an antenna housing that can be mounted on an exterior fuselage of an aircraft. A radio antenna carried by the antenna housing can communicate with radio devices within a field of view of the radio antenna when mounted on the exterior fuselage. A radio sensor carried by the antenna housing can communicate with radio devices outside the field of view of the radio antenna through an electrically conductive portion of the exterior fuselage.
Claims12
An antenna system comprising:
- (a) an electrically conductive antenna housing defining a first resonant cavity;
- (b) a cavity-backed patch antenna carried by the electrically conductive antenna housing within the first resonant cavity, the cavity-backed patch antenna being configured to communicate with radio devices within a field of view of the cavity-backed patch antenna, the cavity-backed patch antenna having a second resonant cavity;
- and
- (c) a radio sensor carried by the electrically conductive antenna housing within the first resonant cavity, the radio sensor including an array of radio sensor antennae arranged circumferentially about the cavity-backed patch antenna, the radio sensor being configured to communicate with radio devices outside the field of view of the cavity-backed patch antenna through an electrically conductive surface on which the electrically conductive antenna housing is mounted.
A device comprising an aircraft conformal antenna system including:
- (a) an antenna housing that is configured to be mounted on an exterior fuselage of an aircraft;
- (b) a cavity-backed patch antenna carried by the antenna housing, the cavity-backed patch antenna being configured to communicate with radio devices within a field of view of the cavity-backed patch antenna when mounted on the exterior fuselage;
- and
- (c) a radio sensor carried by the antenna housing and including an array of radio sensor antennae arranged circumferentially about the cavity-backed patch antenna, the radio sensor being configured to communicate with radio devices outside the field of view of the cavity-backed patch antenna via radio signals propagated by the exterior fuselage.
A large field of view antenna system comprising:
- a cavity-backed patch antenna having a first field of view in which the cavity-backed patch antenna receives radio transmissions;
- a radio sensor including a cooperating array of radio sensor antennae arranged circumferentially about the cavity-backed patch antenna, the radio sensor having a second field of view in which the radio sensor receives radio transmissions outside the first field of view through an electrically conductive surface on which the cavity-backed patch antenna and radio sensor are mounted;
- and
- a signal conditioner that reduces interference between the radio transmissions received by the cavity-backed patch antenna and the radio sensor by performing null steering on the cooperating array of radio sensor antennae.
