Abstract
A rechargeable battery includes first and second electrodes configured to selectively establish, interrupt, or modulate an ion transfer path through relative translational movement between the electrodes. One or more ion transfer regions selectively align with or connect to corresponding ion transfer regions to permit ion transfer. Embodiments including single-region and multiple-region architectures, asymmetric ion transfer structures, coatings, ion-conductive materials, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) structures, and cooperative movement of both electrodes are disclosed.

A rechargeable battery comprising:
- a first electrode;
- and
- a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode;
- wherein at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode is translatable relative to the other electrode between:
- a disconnected position in which a first ion transfer region of the first electrode is separated from the second electrode such that ion transfer between the first electrode and the second electrode does not occur;
- and
- a connected position in which the first ion transfer region is positioned to permit ion transfer between the first electrode and the second electrode.
A rechargeable battery comprising:
- a first electrode including a first ion transfer region;
- and
- a second electrode including a second ion transfer region;
- wherein at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode is translatable relative to the other electrode such that a connection area between the first ion transfer region and the second ion transfer region varies according to relative translational position between the first electrode and the second electrode.
