A device comprising a memory and processing circuitry may implement various aspects of the techniques. The memory may be configured to store an encoded audio bitstream representative of audio data. The processing circuitry may be in communication with the memory, and configured to obtain, from the encoded audio bitstream, normalized residual data as 14 bits using a fixed-point signed representation. The processing circuitry may perform inverse multi-stage vector quantization with respect to the normalized residual data to obtain one or more subbands representative of the audio data, and reconstruct, based on the one or more subbands, the audio data. The processing circuitry may render, based on the audio data, one or more speaker feeds, and output, for playback, the one or more speaker feeds.
