A method provides techniques for supporting a privacy-focused notification management (PFNM) mode of operation of an electronic device that presents visual content and notifications on a display. The electronic device detects a presence of multiple persons potentially viewing the display and enters a PFNM mode of operation. The electronic device detects a connection to at least one personal second electronic device, and on receipt of an incoming notification while in the PFNM mode of operation, analyzes the incoming notification for sensitive content. Based on the incoming notification being deemed to contain sensitive information, the notification is suppressed on the electronic device. A personal second electronic device is queried to determine an active usage status. If the personal second electronic device is currently being worn/used, data corresponding to the incoming notification is sent to the personal second electronic device to discreetly indicate the message to a user.
