Abstract
Disclosed are various embodiments for a hierarchically decisioned failover system. First, a health probe can calculate a respective instance health score for each of a plurality of application instances within an application service. Then, the health probe can calculate a service health score for the application service. Next, the health probe can calculate a zone health score for an application ecosystem. Subsequently, the health probe can initiate a failover of the application ecosystem from a first availability zone to a second availability zone based at least in part on the zone health score.
Claims20
A system, comprising:
- a computing device comprising a processor and a memory;
- and
- machine-readable instructions stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, cause the computing device to at least:
- determine at least one application instance of a plurality of application instances failed to provide one or more health status reports within a period of time;
- generate a separate health status report for the at least one application instance, the separate health status report comprising at least one category or weight representing a severity of a failure to provide the one or more health status reports within the period of time;
- compute an instance health score for individual ones of the plurality of application instances based at least in part on a plurality of health status reports associated with the at least one application instance;
- compute a service health score for individual ones of a plurality of application services based at least in part on one or more instance health scores of application instances associated with a respective application service;
- compute a zone health score based at least in part on a weighted combination of one or more service health scores, wherein respective application services are assigned different relative weights based at least in part on an importance associated with the respective application service;
- automatically determine that a failover condition exists based at least in part on the zone health score;
- and
- initiate migration of the plurality of application services from a first availability zone to a second availability zone in response to determining the failover condition.
A method, comprising:
- determining at least one application instance of a plurality of application instances failed to provide one or more health status reports within a period of time;
- generating a separate health status report for the at least one application instance, the separate health status report comprising at least one category or weight representing a severity of a failure to provide the one or more health status reports within the period of time;
- computing an instance health score for individual ones of the plurality of application instances based at least in part on a plurality of health status reports associated with the at least one application instance;
- computing a service health score for individual ones of a plurality of application services based at least in part on one or more instance health scores of application instances associated with a respective application service;
- computing a zone health score based at least in part on a weighted combination of one or more service health scores, wherein respective application services are assigned different relative weights based at least in part on an importance associated with the respective application service;
- automatically determining that a failover condition exists based at least in part on the zone health score;
- and
- initiating migration of the plurality of application services from a first availability zone to a second availability zone in response to determining the failover condition.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium, comprising machine-readable instructions that, when executed by a processor of a computing device, cause the computing device to at least:
- determine at least one application instance of a plurality of application instances failed to provide one or more health status reports within a period of time;
- generate a separate health status report for the at least one application instance, the separate health status report comprising at least one category or weight representing a severity of a failure to provide the one or more health status reports within the period of time;
- compute an instance health score for individual ones of the plurality of application instances based at least in part on a plurality of health status reports associated with the at least one application instance;
- compute a service health score for individual ones of a plurality of application services based at least in part on one or more instance health scores of application instances associated with a respective application service;
- compute a zone health score based at least in part on a weighted combination of one or more service health scores, wherein respective application services are assigned different relative weights based at least in part on an importance associated with the respective application service;
- automatically determine that a failover condition exists based at least in part on the zone health score;
- and
- initiate migration of the plurality of application services from a first availability zone to a second availability zone in response to determining the failover condition.
