Abstract
Illustrative methods and systems for migrating a large amount of data from a source site to one or more cloud destination sites with minimal interruptions to the source site during the migration process. Configured media agents initiate specialized backup jobs on source data to create backup copies of a specified size that minimally impacts the source site. Those backup copies are received at storage management site and stored in cache. For each received data blob, the illustrative system restores the backup copies to the destination site in the format of the original application data.

A computer-implemented method, the computer-implemented method comprising:
- with one or more processors:
- initiating, by a virtual storage manager executing in a virtual environment, a staged migration operation for migrating a dataset within a source system to a destination cloud environment;
- scaling up the virtual storage manager to perform the staged migration operation;
- splitting up the dataset among a plurality of backup jobs based at least in part on network or computing resources of the source system;
- determining, based on an available bandwidth constraint specified by an applicable information management policy, an amount of data assigned to each backup job of the plurality of backup jobs;
- scheduling the plurality of backup jobs for execution within a window of time specified by the applicable information management policy so as to limit or eliminate impact on services provided by the source system;
- for each backup job of the plurality of backup jobs, initiating backup of data associated with the backup job from the source system to cache of an information management system;
- initiating a restore job from the cache to the destination cloud environment, wherein backup-format data stored in the cache is converted into a format associated with the destination cloud environment;
- and
- after the plurality of backup jobs are completed, performing an incremental backup of the dataset associated with the staged migration operation.
A computer-implemented system, the computer-implemented system configured to:
- with one or more processors:
- initiate, by a virtual storage manager executing in a virtual environment, a staged migration operation for migrating a dataset within a source system to a destination cloud environment;
- scale up the virtual storage manager to perform the staged migration operation;
- split up the dataset among a plurality of backup jobs based at least in part on network or computing resources of the source system;
- determine, based on an available bandwidth constraint specified by an applicable information management policy, an amount of data assigned to each backup job of the plurality of backup jobs;
- schedule the plurality of backup jobs for execution within a window of time specified by the applicable information management policy so as to limit or eliminate impact on services provided by the source system;
- for each backup job of the plurality of backup jobs, initiate backup of data associated with the backup job from the source system to cache of an information management system;
- initiate a restore job from the cache to the destination cloud environment, wherein backup-format data stored in the cache is converted into a format associated with the destination cloud environment;
- and
- after the plurality of backup jobs are completed, perform an incremental backup of the dataset associated with the staged migration operation.
