A backup system includes a production storage system and a plurality of backup devices. The production storage system includes a split processor, an encryption processor, and a storage processor. The split processor creates a plurality of pieces of divided data by dividing backup target data in the storage system. The encryption processor creates a plurality of parities of the plurality of pieces of divided data and encrypts the plurality of pieces of divided data and the plurality of parities to create a plurality of pieces of encrypted divided data and a plurality of encrypted parities. The storage processor stores a plurality of pieces of encrypted divided data and a plurality of encrypted parities in the plurality of backup devices in a distributed manner.
