Dynamic partitioning a power budget among compute agents of a system on chip (soc)

A method for distributing a system power budget among a plurality of compute agents of a computing device, the method comprising:

• accessing, by a producer compute agent from among the plurality of compute agents, a plurality of performance metrics provided by a plurality of consumer compute agents from among the plurality of compute agents, the plurality of performance metrics being measured over a plurality of time intervals;
• partitioning, by the producer compute agent, the system power budget among the plurality of compute agents for each of the plurality of time intervals in response to the plurality of performance metrics to provide a plurality of interval-specific component power budgets;
• distributing, by the producer compute agent, the plurality of interval-specific component power budgets among the plurality of compute agents to distribute the system power budget among the plurality of consumer compute agents over the plurality of time intervals;
• and
• configuring, by the producer compute agent, the plurality of compute agents such that a power consumption of each compute agent from among the plurality of compute agents does not exceed its corresponding interval-specific component power budget during each of the plurality of time intervals.

A system on chip (SoC), comprising:

• a plurality of consumer compute agents configured to provide a plurality of performance metrics over a plurality of time intervals;
• and
• a producer compute agent configured to:
• partition a system power budget among a plurality of compute agents for each of the plurality of time intervals in response to the plurality of performance metrics to provide a plurality of interval-specific component power budgets;
• distribute the plurality of interval-specific component power budgets among the plurality of compute agents over the plurality of time intervals;
• and
• configure the plurality of compute agents such that a power consumption of each compute agent from among the plurality of compute agents does not exceed its corresponding interval-specific component power budget from among the plurality of interval-specific component power budgets during each of the plurality of time intervals.

A computing device, comprising:

• a memory configured to store instructions;
• and
• a producer compute agent configured to execute the instructions, the instructions, when executed by the producer compute agent, configuring the producer compute agent to:
• access a plurality of performance metrics provided by a plurality of consumer compute agents over a plurality of time intervals;
• partition a system power budget among a plurality of compute agents for each of the plurality of time intervals in response to the plurality of performance metrics to provide a plurality of interval-specific component power budgets;
• distribute the plurality of interval-specific component power budgets among the plurality of compute agents over the plurality of time intervals;
• and
• configure the plurality of compute agents such that a power consumption of each compute agent from among the plurality of compute agents does not exceed its corresponding interval-specific component power budget during each of the plurality of time intervals.
