A manufacturing monitoring system includes distributed vision units positioned at manufacturing stations to capture visual data representing station operations. Each vision unit generates time-referenced event records that include media data and contextual metadata describing observed activities. A central processing system receives and aggregates the event records to maintain an operational representation of a manufacturing line. An artificial intelligence agent analyzes the aggregated event data relative to a learned reference operating context and provides event-associated information to a user interface. In some implementations, the system associates event records with individual workpieces and may transmit control commands that interrupt operation of manufacturing equipment when observed activity departs from the reference operating context.
