Abstract
There is provided a hologram engine arranged to receive a plurality of sub-holograms or sub-holograms The hologram engine may be arranged to divide a target picture into a plurality of portions. The hologram engine may be further arranged to calculate a sub-hologram of each of the plurality of portions of the target picture. The hologram engine is further arranged to form a hologram by spatially interlacing the sub-holograms in a random or irregular fashion.

A hologram engine arranged to:
- receive a plurality of sub-holograms;
- and
- form a hologram by spatially interlacing the sub-holograms, wherein the spatial interlacing is irregular such that at least one of (i) any patterns in a pixel arrangement of the hologram are irregular or (ii) any periodicity in the pixel arrangement of the hologram is greater than a dimension of the hologram.
A holographic projection system comprising:
- a hologram engine configured to (i) receive a plurality of sub-holograms, and (ii) form a hologram by spatially interlacing the sub-holograms, wherein the spatial interlacing is irregular such that at least one of (a) any patterns in a pixel arrangement of the hologram are irregular (b) any periodicity in the pixel arrangement of the hologram is greater than a dimension of the hologram;
- and
- a holographic wavefront redirector positioned at or substantially adjacent to the hologram, or a relayed copy of the hologram, wherein the holographic wavefront redirector comprises a plurality of redirection zones, wherein a different subset of the plurality of redirection zones is optically coupled to each sub-hologram.
A hologram of a target picture, the hologram comprising:
- a plurality of sub-holograms, each sub-hologram being a sub-hologram of a portion of the target picture;
- wherein the hologram is arranged such that the plurality of sub-holograms are randomly spatially interlaced such that the hologram comprises a sequence of discrete portions of the sub-holograms randomly ordered by sub-hologram.
A holographic wavefront redirector for a holographic projection system for spatially modulating light in accordance with a hologram to form a holographic wavefront, the hologram comprising a plurality of sub-holograms of a respective plurality of portions of a target picture, the plurality of sub-holograms being randomly spatially interlaced such that at least one of (i) any patterns in a pixel arrangement of the hologram are irregular or (ii) any periodicity in the pixel arrangement of the hologram is greater than a dimension of the hologram, and wherein the holographic wavefront redirector comprises:
- a plurality of redirection zones comprising a plurality of subsets of redirection zones, each subset being optically coupled to a respective sub-hologram;
- and
- wherein redirection zones of the subsets of redirection zones are arranged in correspondence with the pixel arrangement of the hologram such that pixels of each sub-hologram experience a same deflection angle.
A method of calculating a hologram, the method comprising:
- dividing a target picture into a plurality of portions;
- calculating a sub-hologram of each of the plurality of portions of the target picture;
- and
- forming a hologram by randomly spatially interlacing the sub-holograms such that at least one of (i) any patterns in as pixel arrangement of the hologram are irregular or (ii) any periodicity in the pixel arrangement of the hologram is greater than a dimension of the hologram.
A method of increasing a field of view of a holographic projection system, the method comprising:
- dividing a target picture into a plurality of portions;
- calculating a sub-hologram of each portion of the target picture;
- forming a hologram by randomly spatially interlacing the plurality of sub-holograms such that at least one of (i) any patterns in a pixel arrangement of the hologram are irregular or (ii) any periodicity in the pixel arrangement of the hologram is greater than a dimension of the hologram;
- and
- receiving light at a plurality of redirection zones of a holographic wavefront redirector, wherein a different subset of the redirection zones is optically coupled to each sub-hologram, wherein each subset of redirection zones is arranged to deflect received light at a different deflection angle with respect to a propagation axis to increase a field of view of the holographic projection system.
