Intelligent application of reserves to transactions is described. In an example, server(s) associated with a payment processing service receive first transaction data associated with a plurality of transactions that includes indications, for an individual transaction, of whether a chargeback request occurred and transaction characteristics. A predictive model is trained based at least in part on the first transaction data to output a value indicative of a level of risk that a transaction will be associated with a chargeback request. Second transaction data is received from a computing device of a merchant associated with a payment transaction. A value reflective of a level of risk for the transaction is determined based on inputting the second transaction data into the predictive model. An amount of funds is withheld from a settlement amount based on the value and is deposited in a reserve account of the payment processing service.
