Abstract
An adjustable lens assembly includes a first optical element having a first edge, a second optical element having a second edge, and a fluid volume disposed between the optical elements. One or more actuators are configured to adjust a distance between the first edge and the second edge to change an optical property of the lens assembly. The change in the optical property May include adjustments to optical power, correction for astigmatism, and/or spherical correction. The optical elements may be formed of a semirigid plastic. The lens assembly may be integrated into a head-mounted display.

An apparatus for optical correction, comprising:
- a first optical element having a first edge;
- a second optical element having a second edge;
- a fluid volume disposed between the first optical element and the second optical element;
- and
- a plurality of actuators distributed around a periphery of at least one of the first optical element or the second optical element, the plurality of actuators configured to adjust a distance between the first edge and the second edge at a plurality of locations to change an optical property of the apparatus.
A method for optical correction, comprising:
- analyzing an optical system in a first state, wherein the optical system comprises a first optical element, a second optical element, and a fluid volume disposed between the first optical element and the second optical element;
- ascertaining an optical correction for a user;
- and
- adjusting, by a plurality of actuators distributed around a periphery of at least one of the first optical element or the second optical element, a distance between a first edge of the first optical element and a second edge of the second optical element at a plurality of locations to change an optical property of the optical system to match the optical correction, wherein the adjusting changes the fluid volume between the first optical element and the second optical element.
A method of manufacturing an apparatus for optical correction, comprising:
- arranging a first optical element, a second optical element, and a fluid volume between the first optical element and the second optical element;
- disposing a fluid within the fluid volume;
- and
- arranging a plurality of actuators at a periphery of at least one of the first optical element or the second optical element such that the plurality of actuators are configured to adjust a distance between a first edge of the first optical element and a second edge of the second optical element at a plurality of locations to change an optical property of the apparatus.
