The disclosure provides multicore optical fibers with low sensitivity to microbending, low crosstalk, and low coated diameter. Low microbending sensitivity is achieved by (1) configuring the relative refractive index profile of the optical fiber to have a mode field diameter less than or equal to 8.2 μm at 1310 nm and (2) reducing the in situ modulus of the primary coating to less than or equal to 0.25 MPa. The low mode field diameter also reduces crosstalk between cores. The optical fiber preferably includes a secondary coating with an in situ modulus greater than or equal to 1200 MPa. The relative refractive index profile of the optical fiber preferably includes a trench cladding region with a moat volume greater than or equal to 30% Δ-μm2. The multicore optical fibers enable high core density in cables and cables with reduced sensitivity of attenuation to temperature.
