Abstract
An optical system includes a Pancharatnam-Berry Phase (PBP) lens configured to diffract light at three distinct wavelengths corresponding to red, green, and blue spectra, where the PBP lens includes a multilayer structure with alternating chiral and achiral liquid crystal layers, and the PBP lens has a transparency of at least 85% to wavelengths outside the red, green, and blue spectra.

An optical system comprising:
- a Pancharatnam-Berry Phase (PBP) lens configured to diffract light at three distinct wavelengths corresponding to red, green, and blue bands, wherein
- the PBP lens includes a multilayer structure with alternating chiral and achiral liquid crystal layers, and
- the PBP lens has a transparency of at least 85% to wavelengths outside the red, green, and blue bands.
An optical display system comprising a stacked optical element including:
- a first Pancharatnam-Berry Phase (PBP) lens;
- a second PBP lens;
- and
- a third PBP lens,
- each of the first, second, and third PBP lenses being a triple-notched diffractive lens configured to diffract light at three distinct wavelengths corresponding to red, green, and blue bands while being transparent to out-of-band wavelengths,
- the stacked optical element further including a first color-selective half-wave retarder disposed between the first PBP lens and the second PBP lens and a second color-selective half-wave retarder disposed between the second PBP lens and the third PBP lens.
A Pancharatnam-Berry Phase lens comprising a multilayer liquid crystal stack having alternating achiral liquid crystal layers and chiral liquid crystal layers of opposite handedness, the achiral liquid crystal layers being patterned with a spatially varying fast-axis orientation to impart a geometric-phase profile, the multilayer liquid crystal stack beginning and ending with an achiral liquid crystal layer.
