A cooking appliance includes a cabinet and a cooktop. A component compartment is defined within the cabinet and positioned below the cooktop. Furthermore, an aperture is defined through the cooktop and provides fluid communication between the compartment and the cooktop. Moreover, the appliance includes a spill diverter positioned within the compartment and aligned with the aperture. The diverter is configured to capture and direct matter that enters the aperture. The diverter includes a chute sloped downward within the compartment whereby the matter is directed downward along the chute after entering the chute. Additionally, the diverter includes an umbrella flange positioned directly below the aperture. The flange is sloped downward toward the chute for directing the matter downward along the flange to the chute. The flange includes a trailing edge positioned beyond an opening defined through the chute whereby the trailing edge inhibits the matter from spilling through the opening.
