Abstract
A downhole valve assembly includes a safety valve and an actuator that opens and/or closes the valve. The actuator can be an electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA), an electro mechanical actuator (EMA), or an electro hydraulic pump (EHP). The downhole safety valve can also include an electric magnet. The electric magnet can act as or control a magnetic decoupling mechanism to control closure of the safety valve.

A system, comprising:
- an electro-mechanical coupling configured to provide a holding force between an actuator member of an actuator and a driven member of a driven component, wherein the electro-mechanical coupling comprises:
- a magnetic coupling configured to provide a first portion of the holding force, wherein the magnetic coupling comprises an electric magnet;
- and
- a mechanical coupling configured to provide a second portion of the holding force, wherein the mechanical coupling comprises a latch mechanism comprising:
- a first collet;
- and
- a second collet concentric with the first collet over an axial distance, wherein the first and second collets are in a locked configuration in response to an activated state of the electric magnet, and the first and second collets are in an unlocked configuration in response to a deactivated state of the electric magnet.
A method, comprising:
- operating an electro-mechanical coupling to provide a holding force between an actuator member of an actuator and a driven member of a driven component, wherein operating the electro-mechanical coupling comprises:
- operating a magnetic coupling to provide a first portion of the holding force, wherein the magnetic coupling comprises an electric magnet;
- and
- operating a mechanical coupling to provide a second portion of the holding force, wherein the mechanical coupling comprises a latch mechanism comprising:
- a first collet;
- and
- a second collet concentric with the first collet over an axial distance, wherein the first and second collets are in a locked configuration in response to an activated state of the electric magnet, and the first and second collets are in an unlocked configuration in response to a deactivated state of the electric magnet.
A system, comprising:
- an electro-mechanical coupling configured to provide a holding force between an actuator member of an actuator and a driven member of a driven component, wherein the electro-mechanical coupling comprises:
- a magnetic coupling configured to provide a first portion of the holding force, wherein the magnetic coupling comprises an electric magnet;
- and
- a mechanical coupling configured to provide a second portion of the holding force, wherein the mechanical coupling comprises a latch mechanism comprising:
- a first collet;
- a second collet;
- a rod, wherein the first collet, the second collet, and the rod are concentric at least over an axial distance;
- a first latch between the first and second collets;
- and
- a second latch between the second collet and the rod.
