A latch for a closure panel of a motor vehicle includes a ratchet moveable between a primary striker capture position, a secondary striker capture position, and a striker release position. At least two pawls are aligned with the ratchet to prevent the ratchet from moving to a striker release position, wherein the pawls are moveable away together from the ratchet during an active pedestrian mode of the latch to allow the ratchet to move to an active pedestrian protection position.
