Abstract
A metal effect pigment composition in granule form for use in powder coatings. The composition includes a metal effect pigment, a binder, and a surface-active additive. The metal effect pigment includes a metallic core and may include one or more layers of a metal oxide, metal hydroxide, or metal oxide hydrate disposed on the metallic core. The binder may be cellulose, a cellulose derivative, starch, a starch derivative or mixtures thereof.
Claims20
A metal effect pigment composition in powder coatings, wherein the metal effect pigment composition is in granule form and comprises:
- 60 to 98% by weight of a metal effect pigment having a metallic core;
- 1 to 30% by weight of a binder which is at least one selected from the group consisting of cellulose, a cellulose derivative, starch, and a starch derivative;
- 1 to 30% by weight of a surface-active additive;
- and
- less than 3% by weight of a mixture of water and an organic solvent, each based on a total weight of the metal effect pigment composition.
(canceled)
A method of producing a powder coating, the method comprising:
- mixing a metal effect pigment having a metallic core, a binder, and a surface-active additive to form a first mixture:
- compacting the first mixture to form granules of a metal effect pigment composition;
- mixing the granules of the metal effect pigment composition with a powder coating binder to form a second mixture;
- and
- bonding the second mixture,
- wherein the binder is at least one selected from the group consisting of cellulose, a cellulose derivative, starch, and a starch derivative.
