A polymer comprising an aromatic poly(amic acid) mainchain of the formula:
- wherein A is an amic acid;
- B is an aromatic diamine comprising at least one anionic moiety;
- and
- C is an aromatic diamine.

A method of producing a poly(amic acid) salt, the method comprising:
- copolymerizing an aromatic dianhydride with at least two aromatic amines, wherein at least one aromatic amine comprises at least one anionic moiety, thereby producing an aromatic poly(amic acid);
- and
- adding a basic agent to neutralize the poly(amic acid), thereby producing a poly(amic acid) salt.
