A system may include a stationary racking structure defining a plurality of tray storage positions. The system may also include a movable rack configured to dock with the stationary racking structure. A system may also include a tower robot configured to transfer trays between the stationary racking structure and the movable rack.

An automated storage and retrieval system comprising:
- a stationary racking structure defining a plurality of tray storage positions;
- a movable rack configured to dock with the stationary racking structure;
- and
- a tower robot configured to transfer trays between the stationary racking structure and the movable rack.

- a plurality of trays each having a flange configured to support the tray;
- a stationary racking structure comprising shelf brackets configured to engage the tray flanges;
- a movable rack configured to dock with the stationary racking structure;
- and
- a tower robot configured to transfer the flange-supported trays between the stationary racking structure and the movable rack.

- a stationary racking structure comprising shelf brackets configured to engage the tray flanges;
- a movable rack configured to dock with the stationary racking structure;

- two vertical carriages mounted to the tower robot;
- and
- four tray extractors mounted to the vertical carriages and configured to retrieve and store the flange-supported trays in the stationary racking structure and the movable rack.
