A method is provided for operating a driver assistance system configured for longitudinally guiding a motor vehicle, wherein an actual vehicle speed is controlled to a target vehicle speed while the vehicle is in motion. The system includes a setting unit configured to manually set the target vehicle speed and a speed unit configured to determine a speed specification for a road segment. When a change in the speed specification is detected, the newly determined speed specification is compared with the target vehicle speed. The newly determined speed specification is automatically adopted unless the manually set target vehicle speed is lower than both a previously determined speed specification and the newly determined speed specification. When the target vehicle speed is manually set, a deviation from the speed specification is determined and compared to a threshold value, and the speed specification is adopted when the deviation is within the threshold.
