Disclosed herein are techniques for in-transit inventory sortation. For example, a ship can include a storage area to maintain a first group of containers having unsorted inventory, a sortation area to maintain a second group of containers having sorted inventory, a container movement system to move, while the ship is in transit, the unsorted inventory from the storage area to the sortation area, and a sortation system to sort, while the ship is in transit, the unsorted inventory based on one or more sorting criteria and move the sorted inventory into the second group of containers that satisfy the one or more sorting criteria. The ship can sometimes include automated conveyors to move the inventory in the ship based on the sorting performed by the sortation system.
