The exercise apparatus has a user interface operable to perform active resistance with bidirectional movements. A directional control valve selectively positions a double-acting, pneumatic cylinder between extended and retracted positions. An engagement switch disposed on the exercise tool engages the directional control valve to switch the pneumatic cylinder between extension and retraction. An air pressure regulator fluidly connected with the pneumatic cylinder adjusts a continuous supply of air from a powered air source to maintain active resistance upon the exercise tool at a constant force. The air pressure regulator adjusts air pressure in response to a reactive resistance applied to the exercise tool by a user of the exercise apparatus. Upon disengagement of the engagement switch by the user, the directional control valve defaults the pneumatic cylinder into the retracted position.
