Abstract
An apparatus for delivering stimulation energy to a patient is provided. The apparatus comprises an algorithm for determining a stimulation paradigm comprising one or more stimulation parameter settings, and an implantable system comprising an implantable device. The implantable device comprises at least one sensor for measuring evoked compound action potentials (eCAPs), muscle responses, and/or other neural responses, and multiple stimulation elements configured to deliver the stimulation energy to tissue based on the stimulation paradigm. The algorithm is configured to determine the stimulation paradigm based on the measured neural responses. Methods of delivering stimulation energy are also provided.
Claims20
A method for controlling delivery of stimulation energy to tissue of a patient, comprising:
- receiving, by a controller, neural-response data from an implantable device comprising at least one sensor and a plurality of stimulation elements, the neural-response data representing a plurality of measured neural responses induced by stimulation energy delivered to the tissue by the plurality of stimulation elements;
- evaluating, by the controller, a change in neural-response magnitude among the plurality of measured neural responses across a plurality of stimulation pulses delivered by the plurality of stimulation elements;
- determining, by the controller, a stimulation paradigm comprising at least one stimulation parameter setting based on the evaluated change in neural-response magnitude;
- and
- controlling, by the controller, the implantable device to deliver the stimulation energy according to the stimulation paradigm by varying the at least one stimulation parameter setting based on the evaluated change in neural-response magnitude.
A stimulation system for a patient, comprising:
- an implantable device comprising at least one sensor and a plurality of stimulation elements configured to deliver stimulation energy to tissue of the patient;
- and
- an external device communicably coupled to the implantable device, the external device comprising a controller and a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the controller, cause the controller to:
- receive neural-response data from the implantable device, the neural-response data representing a plurality of measured neural responses induced by stimulation energy delivered to the tissue by the plurality of stimulation elements;
- evaluate a change in neural-response magnitude among the plurality of measured neural responses across a plurality of stimulation pulses delivered by the plurality of stimulation elements;
- determine a stimulation paradigm comprising at least one stimulation parameter setting based on the evaluated change in neural-response magnitude;
- and
- control the implantable device to deliver the stimulation energy according to the stimulation paradigm by varying the at least one stimulation parameter setting based on the evaluated change in neural-response magnitude.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:
- receiving neural-response data from an implantable device comprising at least one sensor and a plurality of stimulation elements, the neural-response data representing a plurality of measured neural responses induced by stimulation energy delivered to tissue of a patient by the plurality of stimulation elements;
- evaluating a change in neural-response magnitude among the plurality of measured neural responses across a plurality of stimulation pulses delivered by the plurality of stimulation elements;
- determining a stimulation paradigm comprising at least one stimulation parameter setting based on the evaluated change in neural-response magnitude;
- and
- controlling the implantable device to deliver the stimulation energy according to the stimulation paradigm by varying the at least one stimulation parameter setting based on the evaluated change in neural-response magnitude.
