Safety clip for a medical device and method of use

A safety clip for a catheter insertion needle, the safety clip comprising:

• a proximal portion comprising a first proximal wall directly connected to a second proximal wall at a clip bend, the first proximal wall defining a first proximal aperture and the second proximal wall defining a second proximal aperture, the second proximal wall being more proximal than the first proximal wall;
• a first distal portion comprising a first distal wall, the first distal wall defining a first distal aperture for receiving the needle;
• a first clip arm extending from the first distal portion to the first proximal wall and comprising a medial aperture for receiving the needle;
• a second distal portion comprising a second distal wall, the second distal wall defining a second distal aperture for receiving the needle;
• a second clip arm extending from the second distal portion to the second proximal wall;
• the first clip arm and the second clip arm being in contact with the needle, and the first clip arm and the second clip arm are configured to flex between a first configuration and a second configuration to move the safety clip relative to the needle;
• wherein, when the first clip arm and the second clip arm are in the first configuration, the safety clip is able to slide along a length of the needle and the first distal wall and the second distal wall are spaced apart;
• wherein, when the first clip arm and the second clip arm are in the second configuration, the second proximal aperture is configured to engage a swaged portion of the needle such that the first distal wall and the second distal wall overlap to cover a tip of the needle;
• and
• wherein the first clip arm and the second clip arm do not intersect in either the first configuration or the second configuration.
