A heat treatment device (100; 220) includes at least one infrared radiator (110, 112) including at least one controllable heat source to emit infrared radiation to a skin area of a user of the heat treatment device (100; 200). At least one heat sensor (140, 142) is arranged to detect a surface temperature at the user's skin area, and a controller (160) is configured to control a heat output of the at least one infrared radiator (110, 112) based on the detected surface temperature at the user's skin area. When operating with a thermal output delivered to the user in the range of 20 to 120 milliwatts per square centimeter at the user's skin area, the infrared radiator (110, 112) has a minimum delay of less than 5 seconds to achieve a difference of at least 20% in the thermal output delivered to the user in the skin area.
