Abstract
A system for treating a bifurcation includes a first radially expandable stent and a second radially expandable stent. The first stent has a side hole and a plurality of lateral elements extending from the side hole. The second stent has a plurality of axial elements extending away from the proximal end of the second stent. The axial elements of the second stent interdigitate with the lateral elements of the first stent when both stents have been expanded.
Claims30
A stent delivery system for treating a bifurcation in a vessel, the stent delivery system comprising:
- a first delivery catheter comprising a first elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, and a first expandable member coupled to the distal end of the first elongate shaft;
- a second delivery catheter comprising a second elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, and a second expandable member coupled to the distal end of the second elongate shaft;
- and
- a first radially expandable stent disposed over the first expandable member, the first radially expandable stent having a proximal portion, a distal portion, and a sidewall having a side hole therethrough,
- wherein a portion of the second elongate shaft is disposed under the proximal portion of the first radially expandable stent and exits through the side hole,
- wherein the distal portion of the first radially expandable stent is crimped to the first expandable member under a first crimping condition such that the distal portion is retained against axial displacement from the first expandable member during intravascular delivery, and
- wherein the proximal portion of the first radially expandable stent is crimped under a second crimping condition different from the first crimping condition such that the proximal portion retains the portion of the second elongate shaft beneath the proximal portion while permitting the second elongate shaft to axially slide relative to the first elongate shaft.
A stent delivery system for treating a vessel bifurcation, the stent delivery system comprising:
- a first delivery catheter having a first balloon;
- a second delivery catheter having a second balloon, the second delivery catheter at least partially coupled to the first delivery catheter;
- and
- a bifurcation stent disposed over the first balloon and extending longitudinally from a distal end to a proximal end, the bifurcation stent having a sidewall with a side hole formed therein,
- wherein the bifurcation stent defines a first crimping zone extending along the first balloon between the distal end and a transition location adjacent the side hole, and a second crimping zone extending along the first balloon from the transition location to the proximal end,
- wherein the first crimping zone defines a substantially circular cross-section around the first balloon, and the second crimping zone defines a non-circular cross-section around the first balloon and a portion of the second delivery catheter,
- wherein the bifurcation stent is retained on the first balloon by the first crimping zone during intravascular delivery, and wherein the second delivery catheter is axially slidable relative to the first balloon within the second crimping zone.
A method of assembling a stent delivery system for treating a vessel bifurcation, the method comprising:
- positioning a first radially expandable stent over a first expandable member of a first delivery catheter, the first radially expandable stent having a proximal portion, a distal portion, and a sidewall having a side hole therethrough;
- crimping the distal portion of the first radially expandable stent to the first expandable member under a first crimping condition to retain the distal portion on the first expandable member during intravascular delivery;
- positioning a portion of a second elongate shaft of a second delivery catheter under the proximal portion of the first radially expandable stent and through the side hole;
- and
- crimping the proximal portion of the first radially expandable stent under a second crimping condition different from the first crimping condition, such that the proximal portion surrounds both the first expandable member and the portion of the second elongate shaft while permitting axial sliding of the second elongate shaft relative to the first expandable member.
