Abstract
This invention provides coral-based scaffolds for cartilage repair, and instruments for insertion and utilization of same within a site of cartilage repair.
Claims20
A scaffold for tissue repair, the scaffold formed of an individual piece of solid coral containing pores, wherein the scaffold is cylindrical and comprises at least one longitudinally extending hollow along the longitudinal axis of the scaffold, wherein the at least one longitudinally extending hollow has internal exposed surfaces within the individual piece of solid coral, wherein the internal exposed surfaces provide locations for regeneration of cartilage tissue or bone tissue or a combination thereof when the scaffold is implanted in a cartilage or osteochondral defect site.
A scaffold for tissue repair of a cartilage or osteochondral defect, the scaffold formed of an individual piece of solid coral containing pores, wherein the scaffold is cylindrical and comprises a single longitudinally extending hollow extending along its central longitudinal axis, wherein the single longitudinally extending hollow has internal exposed surfaces within the individual piece of solid coral that promote fluid and nutrient transport and cell migration along the longitudinal axis of the scaffold, wherein the internal exposed surfaces provide locations for regeneration of cartilage tissue or bone tissue or a combination thereof when the scaffold is implanted in a cartilage or osteochondral defect, and wherein the longitudinal axis of the scaffold has a length of about 1-18 millimeters (mm).
