Abstract
The invention relates to magnesium screws and screw-like devices for dental implant surgery and, more particularly, to magnesium and magnesium-based tenting devices for implementation in periosteal and gingival tissue overlying an alveolar ridge of a mandible or maxilla to provide vertical ridge augmentation, i.e., bone regeneration. The tenting devices may be composed of magnesium in dry form, such as metallic magnesium and salts thereof; or magnesium alloy including magnesium in dry form and at least one alloying element or compound; or magnesium-polymer composite including magnesium in dry form and at least one polymer.
Claims13
A dental tenting implant device, comprising:
- a metal material selected from magnesium, magnesium alloy, and magnesium-polymer composite;
- and
- a biodegradable structure formed of the metal material, comprising:
- a screw head extending from a top surface to a bottom surface;
- and
- a screw shaft connected to the bottom surface of the screw head and extending perpendicularly therefrom to an end of the structure;
- wherein the implant device when implanted provides a sustained delivery of magnesium to a tissue environment surrounding the device, and
- wherein the screw head portion of the implant device is not implanted into tissue and the screw shaft portion of the implant device is implanted into the tissue, and
- wherein the screw head is resorbed in a shorter time than the screw shaft.
A method of implanting a screw or screw-like tenting device to heal and/or regenerate tissue, comprising:
- obtaining a metal material selected from magnesium, magnesium alloy, and magnesium-polymer composite;
- forming a biodegradable structure from the metal material, comprising:
- a screw head extending from a top surface to a bottom surface;
- and
- a screw shaft connected to the bottom surface of the screw head and extending perpendicularly therefrom to an end of the structure;
- and
- sustaining a delivery of magnesium from the implant device to a tissue environment surrounding the device,
- wherein the screw head portion of the implant device is not implanted into tissue and the screw shaft portion of the implant device is implanted into the tissue, and
- wherein the screw head is resorbed in a shorter time than the screw shaft.
