A surgical system includes an energy-based surgical instrument including a local generator and a remote generator separate from the energy-based surgical instrument. The energy-based surgical instrument has an energy mode that, in response to activation, delivers an amount of energy to a patent tissue. The remote generator is configured to generate a first amount of energy for the energy mode of the energy-based surgical instrument, and the local generator is configured to generate a second amount of energy, less than the first amount of energy of the remote generator, for the energy model. The energy-based surgical instrument may include a controller configured to determine whether to use the remote generator or the local generator for activation of the energy mode of the energy-based surgical instrument. The energy-based surgical instrument may also include a power accumulator, which may be charged using energy provided by the remote generator.
