Abstract
A spinal fusion clamp implant that connects two vertebra, preferably the C1 and C2 vertebra. The clamp implant includes a clamp assembly that connects to the C1 vertebra. The clamp assembly includes at least one superior jaw and at least one inferior jaw. The superior jaw and the inferior jaw are opposedly arranged and clamp onto posterior arch of the C1 vertebra. The clamp implant also includes an implant assembly that connects to the implant used in C2, and a connection system that connects the clamp assembly with said C2 implant assembly.
Claims20
A spinal implant for implanting at a spine, wherein the spine presents a longitudinal axis, the spinal implant comprising:
- one or more clamp assemblies, the one or more clamp assemblies each comprising:
- a superior jaw;
- an inferior jaw connected to the superior jaw by a ball joint;
- wherein each of the one or more clamp assemblies is configured for mounting to a portion of a single vertebra;
- a clamp body connected to the one or more clamp assemblies,
- wherein the clamp body forms a base portion for the one or more clamp assemblies;
- and
- one or more locking screws received within the clamp body and contacting an outer surface of the superior jaw of the one or more clamp assemblies,
- wherein rotation of the one or more locking screws advances the one or more locking screws along the outer surface of the superior jaw of the one or more clamp assemblies to close the one or more clamp assemblies on to the single vertebra.
A medical implant comprising:
- a first clamp assembly comprising:
- a first superior jaw;
- and
- a first inferior jaw connected to the first superior jaw by a first ball joint;
- a second clamp assembly comprising:
- a second superior jaw;
- and
- a second inferior jaw connected to the second superior jaw by a second ball joint,
- a clamp body connecting the first clamp assembly and the second clamp assembly adjacent to each other such that the first clamp assembly mounts to a first portion of a single vertebra and the second clamp assembly mounts to a second portion of the single vertebra generally opposite of the first portion of the single;
- a first locking screw received in the clamp body;
- and
- a second locking screw received in the clamp body,
- wherein an outer surface of the first superior jaw acts as a first cam surface for the first locking screw such that rotation of the first locking screw provides progressive clamping of the first superior jaw on the single vertebra,
- wherein an outer surface of the second superior jaw acts as a second cam surface for the second locking screw such that rotation of the second locking screw provides progressive clamping of the second superior jaw on the single vertebra.
A method of performing spinal surgery comprising:
- providing instructions for performing the spinal surgery, the instructions comprising:
- inserting a spinal implant into a patient at a spine, the spinal implant comprising:
- a clamp assembly comprising:
- one or more clamp assemblies, the one or more clamp assemblies each comprising:
- a superior jaw;
- an inferior jaw connected to the superior jaw by a ball joint,
- wherein each of the one or more clamp assemblies is configured for mounting to a portion of a first vertebra;
- and
- a clamp body connected to the one or more clamp assemblies,
- wherein the clamp body forms a base portion for the one or more clamp assemblies;
- and
- rotating one or more locking screws received within the clamp body to close the one or more clamp assemblies on the first vertebra.
