Core needle biopsy device for collecting multiple samples in a single insertion

A core needle biopsy device, comprising:

• (a) a body;
• (b) a cutter extending from the body, the cutter including an open distal end defined by a sharp edge;
• (c) a piercer disposed within the cutter, the piercer defining a notch, the piercer being movable relative to the cutter to sever a tissue sample into the notch via the sharp edge;
• and
• (d) a drive assembly, including;
• (i) a cutter drive assembly having a cutter carriage and a cutter driver extending from the cutter carriage;
• (ii) a piercer drive assembly having piercer carriage, a lead screw, and a release mechanism, the release mechanism being configured to release axial translation of the lead screw relative to the body to fire the piercer;
• and
• (iii) an actuation mechanism, the actuation mechanism being configured to selectively engage the cutter carriage and the release mechanism.

A core needle biopsy device, comprising:

• (a) a body;
• (b) a cutter extending from the body, the cutter including an open distal end defined by a sharp edge;
• (c) a piercer disposed within the cutter, the piercer defining a notch, the piercer being movable relative to the cutter to sever a tissue sample into the notch via the sharp edge;
• and
• (d) a drive assembly, including;
• (i) a cutter drive assembly having a cutter carriage and a cutter driver extending from the cutter carriage;
• (ii) a piercer drive assembly having piercer carriage, a lead screw, and a release mechanism, the release mechanism being configured to release axial translation of the lead screw relative to the body to fire the piercer;
• and
• (iii) an actuation mechanism, the actuation mechanism being configured to selectively engage the cutter carriage and the release mechanism,
• at least a portion of the cutter drive assembly and at least a portion of the piercer drive assembly each being configured to linearly translate along an axis.

A core needle biopsy device, comprising:

• (a) a body;
• (b) a cutter extending from the body, the cutter including an open distal end defined by a sharp edge;
• (c) a piercer disposed within the cutter, the piercer defining a notch, the piercer being movable relative to the cutter to sever a tissue sample into the notch via the sharp edge;
• and
• (d) a drive assembly, including;
• (i) a cutter drive assembly having a cutter carriage and a cutter driver extending from the cutter carriage;
• (ii) a piercer drive assembly having piercer carriage, a lead screw, and a release mechanism, the release mechanism being configured to release axial translation of the lead screw relative to the body to fire the piercer, the cutter driver being axially aligned with the lead screw;
• and
• (iii) a control shaft, the control shaft being configured to selectively engage the cutter carriage and the release mechanism.
