Efficient and interactive bleeding detection in a surgical system

A system comprising:

• a memory storing instructions;
• and
• a processor communicatively coupled to the memory and configured to execute the instructions to perform a process comprising:
• receiving, from an image capture system during a surgical procedure, a frame of image data representative of an image of a scene of a surgical site;
• determining an exclusion region of the frame of image data, the exclusion region comprising a region of the frame of image data to be excluded from blood detection processing;
• detecting, based on blood detection processing performed on the frame of image data, a region of blood in the scene;
• determining, based on a location of the region of blood in the frame of image data relative to the exclusion region of the frame of image data, whether presentation of a visual indicator that indicates the region of blood in the scene is enabled;
• based on a determination that presentation of the visual indicator is enabled:
• generating, during the surgical procedure, a frame of combined image data representative of a combined image comprising the image of the scene and the visual indicator;
• and
• transmitting, during the surgical procedure, the frame of combined image data to a display device for display of the combined image;
• and
• based on a determination that presentation of the visual indicator is not enabled:
• transmitting, during the surgical procedure, the frame of image data to the display device for display of the image, wherein the image excludes the visual indicator.

A method comprising:

• receiving, from an image capture system during a surgical procedure, a frame of image data representative of an image of a scene of a surgical site;
• selecting an exclusion region of the frame of image data, the exclusion region comprising a region of the frame of image data to be excluded from blood detection processing;
• identifying, based on the blood detection processing and the frame of image data excluding the exclusion region, a region of blood in the scene;
• generating, during the surgical procedure and after the identifying of the region of blood in the scene, a frame of combined image data representative of a combined image comprising the image of the scene and a visual indicator indicating the region of blood in the scene;
• and
• transmitting, during the surgical procedure, the frame of combined image data to a display unit for display of the combined image.
