A light management system includes a source of visible light emitting in at least a first spectral band, an optically transmissive front surface that reflects light incident within one angular range by total internal reflection and transmits light within a different angular range, and an opaque reflective back sheet that reflects and scatters light. The front surface and back sheet are spaced apart and cooperatively form a planar light-trapping structure. A light converting layer of monolithic sheet structure lies between them and has an active layer of optically transmissive material containing first and second light converting materials of different bandgaps, at least one including quantum dots embedded in the material. Light input ports occupying no more than about ten percent of the structure's area admit light through optical elements that angularly redistribute it, and the active layer is sufficiently thin such that trapped light passes through it multiple times.
A light management system, comprising:
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein each of the plurality of optical elements comprises a non-imaging aspherical lens.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein each of the plurality of optical elements comprises a non-imaging cylindrical lens and is optically coupled to the respective light input port.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein each of the plurality of optical elements comprises a non-imaging aspherical lens having a generally round shape.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein each of the plurality of optical elements comprises a non-imaging aspherical lens formed by a generally rectangular body of optically transmissive material.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein the light converting layer comprises an optically transmissive layer bonded to a surface of the active layer and formed from a material which is different from the optically transmissive material.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein the source of visible light is monochromatic, wherein light converting layer further comprises a first protective layer bonded to a surface of the active layer and a second protective layer bonded to an opposite surface of the active layer, and wherein the first and second protective layers are configured to protect the active layer from ambient air and/or moisture.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein each of the plurality of light input ports has a generally round shape, and wherein each of the plurality of optical elements comprises a non-imaging lens having a generally round shape.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein each of the plurality of light input ports has a generally rectangular shape, and wherein each of the plurality of optical elements comprises a non-imaging lens having a generally round shape.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein at least some of the plurality of optical elements are formed from an optically clear material and attached to a common support substrate.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein at least some of the plurality of optical elements are aspherical lenses formed as separate pieces of an optically clear material attached to an underlying substrate plate, the substrate plate formed from a material different from the optically clear material.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein each of the plurality of light input ports is formed by a through hole in a sheet-form material.
A light management system as recited in claim, wherein the light converting layer comprises light scattering elements embedded in and distributed through the optically transmissive material of the active layer.
A light management system as recited in claim, further comprising a surface having light scattering microstructures.
A light management system as recited in claim, further comprising a second light converting layer located behind the light converting layer.
A light management system as recited in claim, comprising light scattering microstructure or surface texture formed in a surface of the light converting layer.
A light management system as recited in claim, comprising an optically transmissive surface having microscopic bulges separated from each other by smooth and planar surface portions.
A light management system as recited in claim, comprising a parallel array of linear grooves having a triangular cross-section and configured to reflect light rays having first incidence angles with respect to a surface normal using total internal reflection and deflect light rays having second incidence angles with respect to the surface normal using refraction.
