The present invention relates to a data communications network and a method for operating same utilizing satellite communications for providing emergency alert warnings. In particular, user locations are monitored according to the location of user devices and based on GPS location data transmitted by the user device. Satellite signal strength is monitored according to all available satellite signals in operable receiving range of the user device, and a satellite with the strongest signal or determined to be most likely to successfully transfer alert communications is automatically selected. Information is subsequently received regarding emergency or alert conditions, and alert warnings are issued to all user devices in the relevant geographical regions. Based upon receiving an alert warning, each user device in the relevant geographical region integrates with one or more input/output devices to communicate an emergency or alert condition audibly and/or visually.
